About

A working artist's
app.

Dance Your Move grew out of a performance practice and an earlier app, not a product brief. What's inside it is the same belief that's been on stage for twenty years — slowed down, opened up, and put in your pocket.

Creator

Shalaka Kulkarni

Asian-American actor, dancer and choreographer Shalaka Kulkarni creates at the intersection of stage and screen. Trained in Bharatanatyam and Kathak, with an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College Chicago, she blends classical and contemporary movement to explore mythology, identity and feminine power, telling the erased stories of Hindu mythology and the diaspora. She has performed across India, the U.S. and Europe. Recent work includes the short film What We Carry and Nyra's Dreams.

Dance Your Move is the digital side of that practice, bringing the same rigour to your pocket. See more at shalakakulkarni.com.

Where it started

Creative Zen → Dance Your Move

Before this app, there was Creative Zen — an Android app released in 2020, built on the same premise: creative prompts based on songs, colors, dance, books, everyday experiences and worksheets. Dance Your Move is that idea, modernized and rebuilt from scratch for a much wider audience.

Creative Zen → Dance Your Move → a new generation of creative journaling. The name changes; the belief that a body can think doesn't.

How it's built

Three things we hold to

No numbers, no scores

Nothing here counts steps, calories or streaks. A prompt asks you to notice something, not to perform for a leaderboard.

Zero skill required

You don't need to be a dancer, a writer or an artist to use any part of this app. The prompts are built to work for someone who's never done any of the three.

Meet the day you're having

Some days you'll write for twenty minutes. Some days you'll just tap save. Both are the app working as intended.

Why both

Why movement and journaling live in one app

People often ask why a journaling app also asks you to move. They look like different products. They aren't.

Words can only get at some of what's going on in you. A gesture, a spiral, a moment of stillness reaches the part that language moves around. The same practice that built a Bharatanatyam performance can build a Tuesday-evening entry.

And over months, the two start to talk to each other — a movement you keep returning to shows up as a word in your journal, and vice versa. That's the point of My Creative World.
